What is simethicone?

Simethicone is available in over-the-counter (OTC) medicines that help relieve pressure and bloating, commonly referred to as gas. Simethicone can be the only ingredient in anti-gas medicines or it can be found in medicines that treat symptoms such as heartburn or diarrhea.

How much simethicone can you take?

Different types of products containing this active ingredient have different strengths. That’s why it is always important to read and follow the Drug Facts label. Most medicines warn against use of an active ingredient for longer than 7-10 days. Stop use and ask a doctor if symptoms persist.

Simethicone is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is safe and effective when used according to label directions. You should never take more medicine or for a longer period of time than what the label says.

What are the side effects of simethicone?

  • Although rare, seek medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
