The CHPA Educational Foundation has developed a series of innovative consumer education programs to support its vision for people to lead happier, healthier lives through responsible self-care. Through public and private partnerships with government agencies and leading healthcare provider and consumer organizations, these programs work to promote the safe use, storage, and disposal of consumer healthcare products among consumers of all ages.

Know Your Dose Campaign

The Know Your Dose campaign educates consumers on how to safely and appropriately use medicines that contain acetaminophen to avoid unintentional overdose. Acetaminophen is the most common drug ingredient in America, found in more than 600 OTC and prescription medicines. Know Your Dose promotes four simple steps for safe acetaminophen use: 1) Always read and follow the medicine label; 2) Know if your medicines contain acetaminophen; 3) Never take two medicines with acetaminophen at the same time; and 4) Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have questions about dosing instructions or medicines that contain acetaminophen.

Know Your Dose is an initiative of the Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition, a group of leading health, healthcare provider, and consumer organizations:

  • Alliance for Aging Research (AAR)
  • American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
  • American Pharmacists Association (APhA)
  • Caregiver Action Network (CAN)
  • Consumer Healthcare Products Association Educational Foundation
  • National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP)
  • National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS)
  • National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA)
  • National Consumers League (NCL)
  • National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE)

The American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration serve as advisors to the Coalition.

Up and Away Campaign

Up and Away and Out of Sight is an educational program to remind families of the importance of safe medicine storage. All medicines and vitamins should always be kept up and away and out of a child’s reach and sight—every time they are used. Up and Away and Out of Sight is part of the PROTECT Initiative, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The PROTECT Initiative is an innovative collaboration bringing together public health agencies, private-sector companies, professional organizations, consumer/patient advocates, and academic experts to develop strategies to keep children safe from unintentional medication overdoses.
